Fergus Austin’s experience with AHV

Meet Fergus Austin, a second-generation farmer from Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. Together with his father and a full-time employee, Fergus tends to a herd of 118 spring calving cows, yielding around 7,000 liters of milk

Discovering AHV: A Second Chance

Fergus’s journey with AHV began when he heard fellow farmers sharing success stories about AHV products, particularly in addressing udder health challenges. Intrigued by these testimonials, he decided to give AHV a try. However, his initial experience was not as expected. It was a turning point when a new consultant, Padraig, joined the picture.

“I wasn’t really happy with the products, and he (Padraig) gave me the support and the confidence to give it another try. I’m on the AHV Fertility Health Programme at the moment. The protocol with the cows for spring calving is to use the AHV Metri Tablet, StartLac Paste, Aspi and for the older cows I also use the Milk Start Tablet.

We do that just to support the cows through the first few days after calving. I find that good for getting them ready for the breeding season, cleaning them out and supporting them.”

The AHV Fertility Health Programme: A Game Changer

Fergus explains his motivation for joining the Fertility Programme, saying, “I do have a high EBI for fertility, but I wasn’t getting results, probably due to the cows being high-yielding and struggling during the initial week after calving.

After introducing the Fertility Health Plan, I went from sub-50% first conception to a 70% conception rate after the first service. So, just looking at the data, it works.”

Fergus uses the AHV Booster Powder in both calves and the cows.
“With the calves I use the Booster Powder to support their immunity throughout the growth phase. The calves grow well, they have no issues. Thank god I have no issues for scouring the last couple years. With the cows I use it when they come under pressure and it seems to rehydrate them really quickly after use.”

“I feel well supported by AHV through Padraig calling and as well as that we have the Nutritionist Michael to chat about the nutritional needs of the cows.

Together, they review milk recording data and create a monthly plan.

“They are always on the phone if there is an issue, I can ring up Padraig or Michael and we chat through different scenarios.” 

Building Future Longevity and Sustainability

Looking ahead, Fergus’s aspirations for his herd include longevity and sustainability. Despite having to reduce cow numbers due to new regulations, he aims to increase overall herd production with AHV’s support and the guidance of their nutritionist. Fergus’s vision is to build a more sustainable, healthier, and productive farm for future generations.

“Here on Bellpark farm we are aiming to continue reducing the traditional methods used and to build a more sustainable healthier productive farm for generations to come.  

My hope is to increase the herds production through the use of AHV products and their support of nutritionist, to really set up the cows for the future.”
